What’s happening NOW on I-41?

In early spring 2024, crews began work for the reconstruction of the Capitol Drive overpass, marking the first scheduled closure of the I-41 Project. Four lanes of traffic are expected to remain open on I-41 during peak travel times, with some scheduled lane closures and detours expected during off-peak hours. Work zones are a sign to slow down. Keep an eye out for orange signs, construction barrels, flags, workers or flashing lights during construction to keep everyone safe.

Road construction will begin in early 2024 and will impact multiple interchanges and overpasses. Click here to view more I-41 Project construction information.

WisDOT and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) staff coordinate regularly during transportation project development.

The I-41 Project team hosts public involvement meetings to share updates and interact with the public, businesses, and local and elected officials.

Professional surveyors take measurements along the corridor, which will provide topographical data used for project planning, design and construction.

Professional surveyors use maps and magnetic locator tools to identify underground survey markers and property pins.

Soil investigations reveal the types of soil, bedrock depth and groundwater conditions upon which roadway structures will be built.

To obtain samples, licensed operators drill to various depths depending on the type of structure expected in a given location.

Engineers analyze the results of the soil samples when designing the roadways, bridges and other structures for the project.

Week of May 6:
I-41 Expansion (Majors Project – Outagamie/Brown)
- Drivers can expect reduced lanes on northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) I-41 between north of WIS 55 and south of Rose Hill Road overpass, nightly, Monday, May 6 to Saturday, May 11, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Rose Hill Road between Fairlane Drive and E. Evergreen Drive is scheduled to close beginning on May 6, 2024, through mid-September 2024.
  - Traffic will be detoured using County OO, WIS 55 and Edgewood Drive.
- Northbound I-41 between WIS 441 (exit 145) and WIS 55 (exit 148) is scheduled to be CLOSED overnight Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  - Detour: From NB I-41, use the off-ramp to southbound WIS 441, take the exit for County OO (Northland Avenue), turn left (east) on County OO. Turn left (north) on WIS 55, continue to the on-ramp to northbound I-41.
- The following ramps are also anticipated to be closed during the overnight full closures:
  - Northbound WIS 441 to northbound I-41 CLOSED from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  - County N on-ramp from northbound I-41 CLOSED from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  - County N off-ramp to northbound I-41 CLOSED from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  - WIS 55 off-ramp to northbound I-41 CLOSED from 11 p.m. to 6 am.

Design/Traffic Management

Tasks in the design phase include finalizing plans and specifications; appraising and acquiring real estate; relocating utilities; finalizing engineering cost estimates; planning and coordinating traffic management and incident response with local municipalities, law enforcement, and emergency responders; and engaging and informing the public about work in the corridor.

Real Estate

Strengthening our highway system requires that WisDOT carefully manage and sometimes acquire the real estate – or right of way – that surrounds it. This property can include land, homes and businesses. Tasks related to real estate work can include property appraisals, negotiations and relocations, and topographic surveys or layouts of proposed impacts to right of way.

Utilities

Almost every highway construction project must address utilities, which are often located within or adjacent to the highway right of way. Tasks related to utilities work can include the relocation, replacement or adjustment of utility facilities that use the path of the highway.

Construction

In addition to the obvious – constructing the project – other tasks during this phase include advertising and evaluating bids from contractors; awarding various work contracts; and continuing coordination and communication with local officials, residents, businesses, utility owners and other state agencies.
