What’s happening NOW on I-41?

Reconstruction of the WIS 47 interchange in Appleton, from a traditional diamond interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), is underway. The WIS 47/Richmond Street bridge over I-41 is now closed until fall 2026.

The NB I-41 ramps will remain open until late June. The SB I-41 ramps will remain open until mid-July.

OPEN TO TRAFFIC: SB I-41 Off-ramp to WIS 96

The southbound I-41 off-ramp at WIS 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) reopened to traffic in late summer. To avoid potential backups, check out alternate routes to the Fox River Mall.

The County J intersection reopened to traffic on August 27. To learn more about the improvements made, check out the I-41 Construction Page.

Open to traffic: Capitol Drive, County N, Rosehill Road

The newly reconstructed Capitol Drive overpass, County N interchange and Rose Hill Road overpass are now open to traffic!

Project Traffic Impacts

Week of August 26

Drivers can expect overnight reduced lanes on Northbound (NB) and Southbound (SB) I-41 in work zones.
Capitol Drive over I-41 between N. Capitol Court and Northridge Lane is closed until fall 2024.
Rose Hill Road over I-41 between Fairlane Drive and E. Evergreen Drive is closed through mid-September 2024.
County N interchange (exit 146) is closed through late September 2024.
French/Southbridge roads through movement is closed from Creamery Road to Innovation Court through fall 2026.

- Drivers will encounter various overnight reduced lanes on Northbound (NB) and Southbound (SB) I-41 in work zones.
- NB I-41 between WIS 15/County OO/Northland Avenue (exit 139) and Ballard Road (exit 144) is scheduled to be CLOSED Monday, June 8 from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
  - DETOUR: Take WIS 15/County OO/Northland Avenue east to Ballard Road. Turn left and continue north on Ballard Road and travel north to NB I-41.
  - The following ramps are also scheduled to close during the nightly I-41 closures:
    NB I-41 on-ramp from Northland Avenue will be CLOSED from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    NB I-41 on-ramp from Richmond Street will be CLOSED from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- NB I-41 on-ramp from WIS 15/County OO/Northland Avenue is scheduled to be CLOSED overnight Friday, June 5, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- NB I-41 at Richmond Street (exit 142) is scheduled to be CLOSED overnight Friday, June 5 from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  - DETOUR: Traffic will be directed to take Richmond Street exit ramp, travel across WIS 47, and re-enter SB I-41.  
  - The following areas are also scheduled to close during the nightly I-41 closures:
    WIS 47/Richmond Street between Evergreen Road and Capitol Drive from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Long-Term Closure
- NB I-41 on-ramp from WIS 96/Wisconsin Avenue is closed through fall 2026.
- Lynndale Drive is reduced to one lane in each direction through June 2026.
- WIS 47/Richmond Street over I-41 is closed through fall 2026.  
- Buchanan Street over I-41 is closed through summer 2026.
- French Road over I-41 in Appleton is closed through late summer 2026.
- East Frontage Road between Kerrigan Drive and County DDD is closed through mid-summer 2026.
- French Road between County DDD and Apple Creek Road in Wrightstown is closed through late fall 2026.

Design/Traffic Management

Tasks in the design phase include finalizing plans and specifications; appraising and acquiring real estate; relocating utilities; finalizing engineering cost estimates; planning and coordinating traffic management and incident response with local municipalities, law enforcement, and emergency responders; and engaging and informing the public about work in the corridor.

Real Estate

Strengthening our highway system requires that WisDOT carefully manage and sometimes acquire the real estate – or right of way – that surrounds it. This property can include land, homes and businesses. Tasks related to real estate work can include property appraisals, negotiations and relocations, and topographic surveys or layouts of proposed impacts to right of way.

Utilities

Almost every highway construction project must address utilities, which are often located within or adjacent to the highway right of way. Tasks related to utilities work can include the relocation, replacement, or adjustment of utility facilities that use the path of the highway.

Construction

In addition to the obvious – constructing the project – other tasks during this phase include advertising and evaluating bids from contractors; awarding various work contracts; and continuing coordination and communication with local officials, residents, businesses, utility owners, and other state agencies.
