BALLARD ROAD CLOSURES
Current: Ballard Road bridge over I-41 CLOSED through Mid-November
Upcoming: Capitol Drive between Commerce Court and Juanita Lane will CLOSE on October 21 through mid- to late November. Capitol Drive at the Ballard Road intersection will close to eastbound and westbound traffic on October 21 through mid- to late November

Capitol Drive between Ballard Road and Commerce Court opened Tuesday, October 21. Work continues along Capitol Drive, with two closures beginning the same day.

OPEN TO TRAFFIC: WIS 15 Bridge over I-41 and Northbound Ramps.

The new WIS 15/Northland Avenue bridge over I-41 and the northbound ramps are open to traffic! Work continues on the southbound ramps.

OPEN TO TRAFFIC: SB I-41 On-ramp from Ballard Road
The SB I-41 on-ramp from Ballard Road is OPEN TO TRAFFIC.
The NB ramps are now schedules to REOPEN in mid-September

The southbound on-ramp to I-41 from eastbound Ballard Road opened to traffic on August 29. Work continues on the Ballard Road bridge over I-41.

OPEN TO TRAFFIC: SB I-41 Off-ramp to WIS 96

The southbound I-41 off-ramp at WIS 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) reopened to traffic on August 29. To learn more about the improvements made, check out the I-41 Construction Page.

The County J intersection reopened to traffic on August 27. To learn more about the improvements made, check out the I-41 Construction Page.

The newly reconstructed Capitol Drive overpass, County N interchange and Rose Hill Road overpass are now open to traffic!

Week of August 26

Drivers can expect overnight reduced lanes on Northbound (NB) and Southbound (SB) I-41 in work zones.
Capitol Drive over I-41 between N. Capitol Court and Northridge Lane is closed until fall 2024.
Rose Hill Road over I-41 between Fairlane Drive and E. Evergreen Drive is closed through mid-September 2024.
County N interchange (exit 146) is closed through late September 2024.
French/Southbridge roads through movement is closed from Creamery Road to Innovation Court through fall 2026.

Week of November 3
Drivers will encounter various overnight reduced lanes on Northbound (NB) and Southbound (SB) I-41 in work zones.
SB I-41 between Wisconsin Avenue (exit 138) and Richmond Street (exit 142) is scheduled to be overnight CLOSED overnight Monday, November 3 from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
- SB DETOUR: Take WIS 47/Richmond Street south to WIS 96/Wisconsin Avenue. Turn right and travel west to SB I-41.
- The following ramp is also scheduled to close during the nightly I-41 closures.
  - SB I-41 on-ramp from Richmond Street will be CLOSED from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
NB I-41 on-ramp to WIS 96 (exit 138) will be CLOSED overnight Monday, November 3, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
SB I-41 off-ramp to WIS 96 (exit 138) will be CLOSED overnight Tuesday, November 4, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
SB I-41 off-ramp to Ballard Road (exit 144) will be CLOSED during off-peak hours Tuesday, November 4 through Thursday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
NB I-41 off-ramp to Ballard Road (exit 144) will be CLOSED during off-peak hours Tuesday, November 4 through Thursday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
County U between West Frontage Road and East Frontage Road will be CLOSED Tuesday, November 4 through Thursday, November 6, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
SB I-41 at County U (exit 154) is scheduled to be CLOSED nightly Wednesday, November 5 and Thursday, November 6, from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
- DETOUR: Traffic will be directed to take County U exit ramp, travel across County U, and re-enter SB I-41.  
Long Term Closures
- SB I-41 on- and off-ramps from WIS 15/County OO/Northland Avenue are closed through fall 2025.
- Lynndale Drive is reduced to one lane in each direction through late spring 2026.
- Ballard Road over I-41 is closed through late fall 2025.
- Capitol Drive between Commerce Court and Juanita Lane is closed through mid- to late November 2025.
- French Road between County DDD and Apple Creek Road is closed through mid-November 2025

Design/Traffic Management

Tasks in the design phase include finalizing plans and specifications; appraising and acquiring real estate; relocating utilities; finalizing engineering cost estimates; planning and coordinating traffic management and incident response with local municipalities, law enforcement and emergency responders; and engaging and informing the public about work in the corridor.

Real Estate

Strengthening our highway system requires that WisDOT carefully manage and sometimes acquire the real estate – or right of way – that surrounds it. This property can include land, homes and businesses. Tasks related to real estate work can include property appraisals, negotiations and relocations, and topographic surveys or layouts of proposed impacts to right of way.

Utilities

Almost every highway construction project must address utilities, which are often located within or adjacent to the highway right of way. Tasks related to utilities work can include the relocation, replacement or adjustment of utility facilities that use the path of the highway.

Construction

In addition to the obvious – constructing the project – other tasks during this phase include advertising and evaluating bids from contractors; awarding various work contracts; and continuing coordination and communication with local officials, residents, businesses, utility owners and other state agencies.
